For Swiss Medtech, the referendum result is a clear call to action for politicians and the authorities. Switzerland must address issues associated with population growth and immigration in a targeted manner – particularly in relation to housing, transport infrastructure, healthcare, the labour market and public safety. At the same time, it is essential that framework conditions ensuring that Switzerland remain a successful hub for business and innovation are strengthened.
«The result is a clear mandate to tackle the challenges of immigration more proactively. People’s concerns deserve our full attention, and concrete answers. At the same time, Switzerland must ensure access to the skilled employees who are essential for industry, healthcare, and economic prosperity,» says Adrian Hunn, Director of Swiss Medtech.
The fast-growing medical technology sector already employs over 70,000 people in Switzerland. Better use must be made of the domestic labour pool to meet the long-term demand for a competent workforce. At the same time, it will be necessary to continue recruiting qualified specialists from abroad.
In order to do so, stable and reliable relations with the European Union are essential. They ensure access to skilled workers, research, and international value chains – and play an important role in safeguarding patient access to medical supplies.
Swiss Medtech will continue to advocate for a solution-oriented debate based on facts. The success of immigration management is not measured solely by the number of new arrivals, but by how effectively Switzerland balances growth, prosperity, security of supply and social cohesion.
Swiss Medtech represents around 800 members in its role as industry association for Swiss medical technology. With 71,700 employees and a contribution of 11.9% to the positive trade balance, medical technology is an economically significant sector in Switzerland. Swiss Medtech advocates for conditions that enable the medtech industry to perform at peak capacity and provide first-class medical care.
